สะพานปลาหาดวอนนภา สะท้อนวิถีชีวิตของประมงพื้นบ้านแบบดั้งเดิม เมื่อ 60-70 ปีก่อน แม้จะเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามยุคสมัย ยังคงเป็นที่พักผ่อนหย่อนใจของใครหลายคน
เดิมทีชายทะเลบริเวณนี้เป็นป่าแสม เรียกว่าเพิงล่าง (หาดบางแสนล่าง) เป็นชายหาดเชื่อมต่อจากหาดบางแสน มีชาวบ้านคนไทยเชื่อสายจีนอาศัยเพียงไม่กี่หลังคาเรือน ดำเนินชีวิตด้วยการออกเรือเล็กหาปลาและภูมิปัญญาที่สร้างขึ้น
“เพิงล่าง” ได้ถูกตั้งชื่อใหม่เป็น “หาดวอนนภาศัพท์”โดยให้เกียรติคหบดี คุณนายวอน นภาศัพท์ ภรรยา ของหมอชิต (ยานัตนุ์หมอชิต) ที่ได้มาซื้อทีดินเพื่ออยู่อาศัย และบริจาคให้เป็นโรงเรียนของชุมชน ชื่อ “โรงเรียนหาดวอนนภาศัพท์”
ปี พ.ศ.2486 จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม นายกรัฐมนตรี ได้ประกาศให้บางแสนเป็นสถานที่ตากอากาศและแหล่งท่องเที่ยวอย่างเต็มตัว ทำให้วิถีชีวิตชาวประมงบางแสนเริ่มเปลี่ยนไป มีการค้าขายอาหารทะเลเพิ่มมากขึ้น กลายเป็นแหล่งผลิตอาหารทะเลแห้งและสินค้าพื้นเมืองจนปัจจุบัน
